I’m dismayed by the over-reaction of opponents to The Help. Their hyperbolic statements trying to suggest that all black experiences of the 1960s in the South (and by extension all white people’s) were exactly the same, are as absurd as the idea that The Help is representative of the era. By rewriting the Jim Crow racism and Civil Rights struggle into an all black versus all white story ignores the fact that without all races and classes struggling to achieve equality, we would not have come so far and we could not hope to achieve more.
Moneyball does not represent the entirety of baseball. The Artist doesn’t represent the breadth of cinema. The Descendants in no way codifies the culture of Hawaii. Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close can’t even begin to cover the impact of the 9/11 tragedy. Why then does anyone fear that The Help will be mistaken as all-encompassing of the Civil Rights era?
